For those born with flat feet, chronic pain can be a daily struggle. Even worse,it can lead to other foot and ankle injuries. So seeking treatment for it is important for both relief from pain, and to prevent future problems. Ohio Foot and Ankle Specialists provide dedicated treatment and custom solutions to problems caused by this matter.

What causes flat feet?

Flat feet are a condition in which the arches of the foot are not properly developed.  It may also be referred to as fallen arches. Both terms are used to describe a condition in which a person has no arch or an exceptionally low arch in their feet.

It run in families, so there is a genetic cause for them. In addition, medical conditions such as arthritis can lead to it . Various ankle and foot injuries can lead to a flat foot. Muscle and nervous system diseases including spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy can cause flat feet.  A rare condition known as tarsal coalition, which causes an unusual fusing of foot bones, can result in it.  A damaged or ruptured posterior tibial tendon can also play a role in it.  Finally, it may develop over time as the result of conditions such as age, diabetes, obesity, and other conditions which restrict blood flow to your feet.

Symptoms of Flat Feet

Pain is the top symptom of flat feet. Pain from this problem is felt in a variety of places including:

  • Arch of the foot
  • Ankle (especially the inside of the ankle)
  • Calves
  • Heels
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Lower back
  • Lower legs

Stiffness in the feet is another primary system of it.  If left untreated, it can lead to stress on ligaments and tendons through the feet. This may result in tearing and inflammation.

Can a flat foot be corrected?

A flat foot can be corrected using custom orthotics, and physical therapy in many cases. However, early diagnosis and treatment are essential. If you suspect your child may have it, schedule an appointment with Ohio Foot and Ankle Specialists.  If flat feet are left untreated, they can expedite the development of arthritis, hammer toes, bone spurs, and bunions.
